Checklist for home birth
Christine Clausen
Have I remembered everything? Below is a checklist of things that can be nice to have ready before the birth. You can download a free printable version of the list by clicking here.
Home birth checklist:
- Towels in various sizes
- Bedding that’s allowed to get dirty and can easily be washed
- Washcloths for warm and cold compresses
- Birth pools and accessories if you wish to give birth in water
- Music for relaxation. Prepare a playlist with music you like
- Table for the midwife's tools (an ironing board can also be used)
- A camera that can take photos and record video – remember to check that there is enough space on the memory card, and that it’s charged
- Plastic/protective sheet to keep the mattress on the bed safe
- Warm soft towels, baby blanket, baby clothes, and diapers for the newborn
- A sturdy dining table or similar and a good lamp (if there's a need to stitch tears after birth)
- Large rubbish bags (one for rubbish, one for laundry)
- A roll of regular trash bags
- Panodil and Ipren (for afterpains and/or pain from any stitches)
- A clean washbowl/plastic bowl
- A stack of muslin cloths that have been washed
- Wet wipes
- Juice, apple juice, fruit, and food in the fridge for use during labor
- The freezer filled with ready-made meals, rolls and other food for the days after the birth
- Comfortable underwear and loose clothing for mum after birth
- Nursing bra and breast pads
- Large pads for the first days after birth
- Ice pads (for soreness and swelling after birth). Made by wetting a regular pad with water and placing it in the freezer. Remember to place a piece of cloth between the pad and your skin.
- Lip balm, straws, optional Pilates ball, optional heat pack or hot water bottle
- A packed bag in case of transfer during or after the birth + car seat
- “Birthday celebration” – flags, food, and drinks to celebrate a birthday
- Good working conditions for the midwife: a work surface and light for writing notes, preferably the option of some food and a “resting spot” for longer births.
